7 Common Myths About Liposuction

Liposuction or lipo is a common cosmetic procedure that’s often seen as a quick and easy way of getting rid of stubborn fat. Yes, the procedure removes unwanted fat but it’s not a magical cure. With so much information about liposuction, there are still a lot of misconceptions surrounding the procedure.

What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that involves the removal of unwanted fat and targets fatty deposits. You can perform liposuction on any area of the body where you want to remove fat. Common target areas include the abdomen, thighs, hips, chin and knees. Both traditional liposuction and Vaser liposuction can go alongside other cosmetic procedures like tummy tucks and neck lifts.

Common Myths & Misconceptions Surrounding Liposuction

Liposuction is surrounding by so many myths and misconceptions. Some of these have made some turn away from the procedure.

1. Liposuction Is A Long-Term Weight Solution

This is one of the greatest misconceptions surrounding liposuction. Liposuction is not a weight-loss tool as it only removes stubborn fat that is resistant to diet and exercise. For instance, the most ideal candidate for liposuction is someone who already has an ideal weight. Also, they should be able to maintain their weight even after the procedure.

2. Lipoplasty Results Are Permanent

Liposuction doesn’t prevent excess weight gain in the future. Like most cosmetic procedures, the results can be undone if you don’t take care of yourself.

After the procedure, stubborn fat will be gone from your problem areas. Poor eating habits will, however, see more fat deposits in the surrounding areas.

3. Liposuction is Only For Women

Men, just like women, have body image concerns. This has seen more and more men opt for cosmetic surgery to improve their looks. Liposuction is one of most the common procedures for men.

4. Liposuction is Dangerous

Every surgery carries some element of risk. Liposuction procedures have become sophisticated.

A liposuction procedure only becomes dangerous if an inexperienced plastic surgeon performs it. At the same time, not following your surgeon’s post-operative instructions can lead to complications.

5. Liposuction Cures Cellulite

Cellulite is the fat below the skin surface. It appears uneven and bumpy because it pushes through the connective tissue.

Although it can make you feel self-conscious, cellulite doesn’t pose any health issues. But, you don’t remove cellulite through liposuction as the procedure only makes the cellulite less visible.

6. Liposuction Tightens Loose Skin

You don’t target skin issues with liposuction. Instead, the procedure only targets stubborn fat tissue. So, depending on how much fat you want to target, sometimes you may end up with loose skin. As such, it’s sometimes advisable to combine liposuction with other skin-tightening procedures.

7. Liposuction is Not For Certain Ages

A common misconception is that it’s only for young people. Although some people also say that it’s for older people, the truth is that anybody can undergo liposuction as long as they are suitable.

Liposuction, as a body sculpting procedure, is common. However, the many misconceptions discourage a lot of suitable liposuction candidates.
