Skin lesions refer to any skin area that looks different from the surrounding area. It could be something you’re born with or develop later in life. The skin lesion’s physical characteristics like colour, size, texture, and location can help determine if there is an underlying cause and the best approach to treatment.

What are Skin Lesions?

Skin lesions can be lumps, bumps, sores, ulcers, or coloured areas on the skin. They are two broad categories: primary and secondary skin lesions. Primary skin lesions can be present at birth, or you can develop them. Secondary skin lesions are those that occur as a result of irritated primary skin lesions.

The most common types of primary skin lesions include:

  • Moles
  • Freckles
  • Rashes
  • Blisters
  • Nodules
  • Pustules

Common types of secondary skin lesions include:

  • Skin atrophy
  • Scars
  • Crust
  • Ulcer
  • Scale

What Causes Skin Lesions?

Depending on the type of skin lesion you have, there could be a different cause. Some of the most common causes of skin lesions is an infection of the skin, like warts, herpes complex, and acne. Skin lesions like moles and freckles tend to be hereditary. Skin lesions can also be caused by allergies or conditions like diabetes that can cause skin sensitivity.

What are the Symptoms of Skin Lesions?

Although most skin lesions are harmless, they can be malignant or premalignant. This means that they could become cancerous. Because skin lesions can present in various ways, it’s essential to keep an eye out for any abnormal skin changes so that you can visit your doctor and determine if there is an underlying cause of the changes.

If new moles, irregularities, or changes in moles occur, contact your doctor straight away so they can screen for cancer. It’s always better to catch cancer early on so that you can begin treatment quickly.

How Can You Treat Skin Lesions?

Depending on the type of skin lesion you have, the best approach to treatment can differ. Because of the wide range of symptoms of skin lesions, there is no one-size-fits-all route to treating skin lesions. It’s very important that you have a diagnosis from your doctor before using any topical treatments.

ZO Skin Health has a range of products that can help to even out skin tone, reduce discolouration, and improve the overall appearance of the skin. At the Harley Clinic, we can help guide you on both your skincare, mole removal, and skin lesion treatment.
